The Celebration Table
In a time when everyone seems to be rushing from one thing to the next, the days become weeks, the weeks become months, and somehow the years seem to fly by. That is what makes the simple act of sitting down with the people we love so important.
Taking the time to break bread, share a meal, tell old stories and perhaps create a few new ones gives us something increasingly rare—a reason to stop and simply be together.
Of course, it isn’t necessary to set a beautiful table to celebrate. The people gathered around it will always matter more than what is placed upon it. But there is something about setting a special table that quietly tells everyone, today is different. Today matters.
The shiny silver platters that only come out a few times a year. Golden candlesticks holding flickering candles that cast a soft glow across the room. Grandma’s china, used for generations, perhaps with a chip or two along the edge—not imperfections to hide, but reminders of all the meals, holidays, laughter and conversations it has already witnessed.
A few sprigs of evergreen tucked into crystal vases bring the outdoors in and remind us, even in the darkest days of winter, that life continues and brighter days will come.
These things don’t need to match. They don’t need to be expensive, fashionable or perfect. In fact, the pieces with a history are often the ones that mean the most. Together they become part of the ritual of gathering—a connection between those who sat at our tables before us, those sitting beside us today, and perhaps those who will someday carry these traditions forward.
So bring out the good china. Polish the old platter. Light the candles. Add something green from the garden. Invite someone that might be alone.
Because a celebration table is about much more than decorating.
It quietly says:
Today is special. You are special. Stop for a while. Take in the moment. Tell the stories. Share the meal. Make a memory.
And years from now, those memories may be the most valuable things we placed on the table.
